The golden sun was just beginning to set over the African savanna, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink. Safari guide Jabari smiled at the excited children in his jeep.
"Sunset is the most magical time on the savanna," he said softly. "The daytime animals are settling in, and the nighttime animals are just waking up. If we're very quiet, we'll see and hear everything!"
As they drove across the tall golden grasslands, they heard a powerful sound rumble across the plain! [ðĶ Lion Roar] [ðĶ Lion Roar] [ðĶ Lion Roar]
"The King of the Savanna!" whispered Jabari. "Lions roar to talk to their pride and to warn other lions to stay away from their territory. That roar can be heard five miles away!"
Through the tall grass, they could see a pride of lions resting under an acacia tree. The male lion lifted his great head and roared one more time! [ðĶ Lion Roar]
"Look!" pointed a girl named Amara. "Elephants!"
A whole family of elephants was walking slowly toward the watering hole â babies, mothers, grandmothers, all together! [ð Elephant Trumpet] [ð Elephant Trumpet] [ð Elephant Trumpet]
"Elephants live in close family groups led by the oldest grandmother," Jabari explained. "She remembers where to find water and food, even in a drought. Elephants are among the smartest animals on Earth!"
A baby elephant trumpeted happily as it splashed into the cool water at the edge of the hole! [ð Elephant Trumpet]
Nearby, a tower of giraffes was stretching their impossibly long necks to reach leaves at the very tops of the tallest trees!
"Giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth," said Jabari. "Their necks alone can be six feet long â taller than most adult humans! And they can go weeks without drinking water because they get moisture from leaves." [ðĶ Giraffe Bleat]
A dazzle of zebras galloped past the jeep in a thunder of hooves! [ðĶ Zebra Cry] [ðĶ Zebra Cry]
"No two zebras have exactly the same stripe pattern," Jabari pointed out. "Their stripes are like fingerprints â completely unique to each animal! Scientists think the stripes may confuse flies and lions alike."
One zebra stopped and called out to the rest of its herd! [ðĶ Zebra Cry]
At the watering hole, a round grey shape suddenly emerged from the muddy water! [ðĶ Hippo Grunt] [ðĶ Hippo Grunt] [ðĶ Hippo Grunt]
"Hippos spend most of the day underwater to stay cool and protect their sensitive skin from the sun," Jabari said. "But don't let their size fool you â hippos are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa and can run faster than a human!"
More hippos surfaced and grunted to each other! [ðĶ Hippo Grunt] [ðĶ Hippo Grunt]
A massive rhino lumbered past in the distance, head low, making deep sounds as it moved! [ðĶ Rhino Snort]
"Rhinos have terrible eyesight," Jabari said. "But their sense of smell is extraordinary â they can smell a human from half a mile away! Their horns are made of the same material as your fingernails."
High in a nearby tree, a spotted shape draped over a branch blinked slowly in the fading light! [ð Leopard Snarl]
"A leopard!" breathed Jabari. "They're the most secretive of all the big cats. They drag their prey up into trees so lions and hyenas can't steal it â they're incredibly strong!"
The leopard stretched lazily on its branch and snarled once more before closing its eyes. [ð Leopard Snarl]
As they drove on, a flash of brilliant color caught their eyes â peacocks displaying their stunning feathers in the evening light! [ðĶ Peacock Call] [ðĶ Peacock Call]
"Peacocks spread those magnificent tail feathers to attract a mate," said Jabari. "Those aren't actually tail feathers â they're special display feathers that grow above the tail!"
A flock of parrots burst from a tree overhead, squawking as they wheeled across the golden sky! [ðĶ Parrot Talk] [ðĶ Parrot Talk] [ðĶ Parrot Talk]
High above everything, an eagle soared in wide, lazy circles, scanning the grassland below with its incredible eyes! [ðĶ Eagle Screech]
"Eagles can spot a rabbit from two miles away," Jabari said, pointing up. "That eyesight is eight times more powerful than ours!"
As the last rays of sun touched the horizon, an owl called from a fever tree nearby â the night shift was starting! [ðĶ Owl Hoot] [ðĶ Owl Hoot]
"When owls wake up, it means the daytime animals are going to sleep," Jabari said quietly. "The savanna never truly rests â there's always something awake, always something happening."
Near some rocks, a troop of monkeys chattered and leaped, playing their last games before bedtime! [ð Monkey Chatter] [ð Monkey Chatter] [ð Monkey Chatter] [ð Monkey Chatter]
"Monkeys!" laughed Amara as they swung from branch to branch.
As the stars began to appear one by one, all the savanna animals seemed to pause together in the beautiful twilight.
The lions roared a final evening call! [ðĶ Lion Roar] [ðĶ Lion Roar]
The elephants trumpeted goodnight to each other! [ð Elephant Trumpet] [ð Elephant Trumpet]
The hippos grunted as they prepared to leave the water and graze through the night! [ðĶ Hippo Grunt] [ðĶ Hippo Grunt]
"This is my favorite moment," Jabari said softly. "When the whole savanna breathes together between day and night."
The children sat perfectly still, listening to the symphony of the African evening.
[ðĶ Lion Roar] [ð Elephant Trumpet] [ðĶ Giraffe Bleat] [ðĶ Zebra Cry] [ðĶ Hippo Grunt] [ðĶ Rhino Snort] [ð Leopard Snarl] [ðĶ Peacock Call] [ðĶ Parrot Talk] [ðĶ Eagle Screech] [ðĶ Owl Hoot] [ð Monkey Chatter]
"The savanna is like a big family," Amara said. "All the animals need each other!"
"Exactly right," Jabari smiled. "Elephants dig watering holes that other animals use. Zebras eat tall grass so other animals can reach the short grass beneath. Even lions keep the herds healthy and strong by hunting the weakest animals. Every single creature has a role to play!"
That night, Amara fell asleep in her tent, dreaming of lions and elephants and the beautiful golden sunset safari.
